I think the more appropriate question is what percentage of one's total investments are invested in this company, and taking the worst case scenario, that is if the company goes belly-up, can that person accept the loss with no negative accepts on his or her life of lifestyle.
I have quite a few shares myself(the number is not that important), but the overall shares represent only about 5% of my total holdings, the latter which is professionally managed and invested in good and established proven companies.
Sorry if that is not a direct question, but that is the way my mind perceives your question.
