HATE CRIME AT PENN STATION?

- Neal Boortz

Meet 38-year-old Janice Pasterisa. Last Thursday morning, Pasterisa used a 4-inch knife to attack a woman from Whitestone, New York, in New York's Penn Station.

Doctors at New York University Medical Center used more than 30 stitches to close the wounds on the left side of the victim's face. Her husband said doctors told him if Pasterisa had slashed her a centimeter higher, it would have severed all of the nerves and she would have lost her eye.

Pasterisa resisted arrest. She tried to stab all of the officers who confronted her. While she was being handcuffed, she yelled, "I got me a white *****. And I'm proud of it." Pasterisa, you see, is black and homeless. Her victim is white.

So far, the attack hasn't been labeled a hate crime. And, in all likelihood, it won't. Because hate crimes are reserved for when a white person (read: straight white male) attacks someone whose skin absorbs more light than his own. Minorities and other exalted classes (including the homeless) are exempt from being charged with hate crimes. Your life matters more to our justice system if you're a member of a cherished minority.

Can you imagine the outrage that would have erupted if a white homeless woman had slashed a black woman?
