SURE why not ? I have pre-ordered countless DVD's and books before. I would think it's the manufacturers way of seeing how much is needed in the marketplace. Why manufacture a DVD with say 10 mil units off the bat (manufacture costs and time) when the immediate (pre-order) interest maybe for say 2 mil units ? Same for the sponges is my guess.

Besides I would think the pre-order figures are used in the sales process to the existing customers to further gain shelf space in the marketplace which is a very touchy process. There are reasons why products are in the specific places in stores. Some companies pay for the privilege of eye level and aisle end displays. My brother in law worked for a soft drink company and they had to pay for and stock their own end of the aisle display. Otherwise the display went to the next product or company the store wanted. This may not be the case in all stores, but it does exist.

Smart business if you ask me . . .
