EU-funded project: Gene search towards the identification of novel therapeutical strategies against brain ischemia (StrokeGene)

Stroke and other manifestations of brain ischemia are common and devastating disorders, the outcome of which is largely regulated by specific genomic responses. StrokeGene, a research consortium sponsored by the 5th Framework Programme of the Europan Commission and co-ordinated by the Max Planck Institute, searches for such genes in clinically relevant experimental ischemia models. Brain regions with reversible and irreversible injury are identified and high-throughput gene expression profiling is carried out using digital expression pattern display (DEPD®) and automated DNA chip technology. Outcome specific genes are identified and tested for pathophysiological relevance. Based on this information, novel treatment strategies are designed and evaluated for therapeutic efficacy.
