I can certainly respect your personal preference. I'd prefer riding horse instead of driving myself: the animal has much more "spirit" than even the sportiest car . . . and I'm not at all making fun of your preference with my equestrian reference, as I do enjoy riding. The thing with newspaper is the requirement for economy of scale. It was a product of the 19th century mass production technique. When I was the editor of a newspaper decades ago, the constant battle was circulation count: 200,000 copies per issue meant high profitability; 150,000 meant breaking even; 120,000 or below meant having to cut back on staffing. With the new generation growing up in the 90's thinking Encyclopedia Britanica was "just like Encarta" ('cuz they used Encarta before going to a good library and see the EB set) and the generation of the 2000's growing up thinking "what is Encarta? and why would anyone use Encarta when Wikipedia is far more up to date?," the circulation count for newspapers is falling faster than owners of Buicks in this country. BTW, I like Buiks myself.
