I've thought about that many times. Can you imagine the declaration of independence lost forever in an old tape? Thank god there were no computers back then. And reading tapes is not the only issue. It works fine for flat files as long as the original record layout is known. And relational and codasyl databases backed up into tapes with a proprietary format that requires the original long gone program and hardware to read it?
