More evidence of a possible collaboration between Murray Brilliant (University of Arizona) and DNAP, in the form of genotyping work done for an undergraduate study (from January 2004).

THE HUMAN P AND MATP GENES ARE ASSOCIATED WITH VARIATIONS IN HUMAN CONSTITUTIVE PIGMENTATION

N Garrison, J Kelch, M Kim, B Metelits, D Smith, MH Brilliant

Variations in a number of melanosomal properties are known to cause variations in human constitituve pigmentation. A large number of highly polymorphic genes are known to affect these traits. We hypothesized that interactions between polymorphisms at these loci would be correlated to specific hair, eye, and skin pigmentation phenotypes. In order test this hypothesis, we chose two loci (the P and MATP genes) for PCR amplification and sequence analysis, and another 19 genes to be genotyped by the DNA Print Genomics company. Thus far, only single loci analyses have been performed for a subset of the sample population. These analyses have shown significant correlations between each of two P gene polymorphisms and 1 MATP polymorphism to specific constitutive pigmentation phenotypes. These results indicate that variations in the P and MATP genes are predictive of certain pigmentation phenotypes and that the study should continue with the completion of data collection and analysis at these and other loci.
