Sept. 11 (Bloomberg) -- President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama observed a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. today on the South Lawn of the White House in honor of those who perished in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The president and U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates will host a memorial service later today at the Pentagon for families of the 184 government workers and plane passengers who died when American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the headquarters of the Defense Department at 9:37 a.m.
