Something coming into range could pull all kinds of things out of their ordinary movement patterns and trajectories.
Space is like sheet of fabric held taut at the corners. Bodies in space like weights on the fabric. The dimpling effect of heavy weight on the fabric is going to pull smaller weights toward it. All that is missing is the attraction/repellant factor of these various weights on the fabric. We can't easily duplicate that in a physical model.
