Note: We all know of the somewhat recent screwing we gun owners got omn the ruling having to ship our firearms by UPS and Fex Ex ONLY. Along with the new rules came higher cost associated with the new rules. Well, it appears the reason for this, the so-called safety for us in preventing theft was a joke. Well... this article ought to get you all fired up! ~ Onebgg

People should call UPS regarding possibly stolen packages.

People should contact United Parcel Service directly for any packages they think may have been stolen, Cape Coral police detectives said.

Detectives are investigating a case in which a UPS employee is accused of stealing as much as $250,000 in packages instead of delivering them.

The employee, Craig Podleski, of Cape Coral, remains in jail in lieu of $100,000 bail on grand theft and other charges.

“Detectives are overwhelmed” with calls of people who think some of the alleged stolen items may be theirs, said Sgt. Lisa Barnes, police spokeswoman.

So that detectives can devote their full attention to investigating the case, they request that customers with missing packages call UPS directly at 1-800-742-5877, Barnes said.

Customers may also go to the UPS Web site at ups.com and enter the package tracking number.

Amazing. Unbelievable. Staggering.

Those are some of the adjectives police used Thursday to describe a cache of what could be more than $250,000 in merchandise allegedly stolen by a Cape Coral UPS employee who was supposed to deliver the goods.

Craig Podleski, 38, of Southeast 47th Terrace, is in the Lee County Jail, charged with grand theft of more than $100,000, two counts of larceny theft of $300 to $5,000, dealing in stolen property and larceny of a cargo or shipment. He's being held in lieu of $100,000 bail and faces more charges as the investigation continues.

"This is absolutely one of the biggest theft cases the department has ever investigated," said Sgt. Lisa Barnes, spokeswoman for the Cape Coral Police Department.

"What do you think? Unbelievable, isn't it? This is amazing. It's just staggering," said Chief Robert Petrovich during a news conference in which a sampling of the stolen valuables - more than 80 items - was placed on tables at police headquarters.

Podleski, a UPS employee since January 2000, may face more charges. Detective Keith Nabozny, lead investigator for the case, said he and other detectives are trying to track down the sale of some items over the Internet. He said that aspect of the investigation could take months.

The items on display Thursday are just a sampling of hundreds that will take several days to catalog, Nabozny said. He said the loot includes rifles, handguns, flat-screen televisions, radios, samurai swords, watches, stereos, fine cigars, even a marble top kitchen island.

High-end watches such as Rolex and Omega - which cost from a few thousand to $18,000 or more - and guns that sell for $500 to $2,500 could easily push the value way past the $100,000 amount named in one of Podleski's charges.

Even the police weren't immune to the alleged thefts.

The items included a police badge, a pair of police pants and a pair of shorts ordered by the quartermaster, Barnes said. There was also a $2,200 Schmidt Bender rifle scope that an officer had ordered for personal use.

"We were victims, too," Barnes said "It's insulting."

UPS detectives contacted police Tuesday afternoon to report that a Sony PlayStation, which had gone undelivered, may be inside Podleski's house.

Police went to his house, and they were allowed inside by Podleski's wife, Cheryl Podleski, Nabozny said. Cheryl Podleski refused to comment Thursday.

Investigators saw the PlayStation and matched the serial number to the missing property. Then they saw other suspicious items.

"He had other items for his personal use that were in plain sight," said Sgt. Brian Hite.

Police got a search warrant and came back, finding stacks of stuff throughout the house. They spent at least 16 hours loading everything into a rental truck.

"He must have gotten pretty confident keeping it all in his home, or else he was just not very intelligent," Hite said.
