Under the law passed as a result of the GATT treaty signed in 1994, a patent application filed after June 8, 1995, will have a term of protection that begins on the date of the grant of the patent and ends on a date 20 years after the filing date of the application. The 20-year patent term may be extended for a maximum of five years for delays in the issuance of patents caused by patent interferences, secrecy orders, and/or successful appeals of the patent examiner's refusal to grant the patent.
