A thousand people turn out in Marbella for protest over Los Monteros Hotel
The hotel is theoretically open but has no running water or electricity
Almost a thousand people turned out to show their support to the staff of the luxury Marbella hotel Los Monteros, in a protest march through the town on Wednesday evening. A manifesto read out by the hotel’s former manager, Rafael de la Fuente, called for a solution to the conflict with the hotel’s Russian owner, Ernest Malyshev, to allow the 183 staff to keep their jobs and receive the more than seven months wages they are owed in back pay.
The owner closed Los Monteros in early June and, while it theoretically reopened on the 26th of that month, de la Fuente said there is no running water or electricity laid on, no food, or even any clients.
A plan presented by the owner to reopen the hotel last month was rejected as insufficient by the staff: they said the 180,000 € he planned to spend would only cover one month’s wages.
