Sahara Enters Indian Computing Space

The Subroto Roy controlled Sahara India group is tying up with the South Africa-based Sahara Computers, to float a new hardware company called Sahara Computers and Electronics Ltd. (SECL) that was officially inaugurated on Sep 10.

The Lucknow-based Sahara Group’s maiden foray into information technology marks a startling trend among big corporate houses to venture into new areas often with little core expertise. The group all this while had interests in areas such as para-banking, aviation, media, and housing & infrastructure and has now nose-dived into the plum IT arena.

Be it the pioneering Tatas, who are into manufacturing, aviation, telecommunication, media, or the mighty Reliance who has virtually taken over the city by expanding from oil & natural gas, to telecommunication and power. Or take the Birlas in the manufacturing of infrastructure, insurance, the Godrejs in consumer goods and electrical appliances, or even the Mahindras who are into the automobile service industry, to name a few, all are on an expansion and diversion spree of their own. Another common characteristic that binds them is their urge to have a share of the IT pie.

But Sahara’s entry in the IT arena bodes well for the lackluster hardware industry in India which all this while lacked the presence of a big corporate entity to provide it the required momentum given the fact that much smaller nations like Thailand, and Malaysia fares better in hardware than India.

The September 13 announcement by the processor major AMD, that SCEL will manufacture and sell AMD processor based products and solutions designed for business and consumer technology buyers in the India market can be a shot in the arm for the hardware shuffle in India. These solutions will include computing platforms based on AMD Athlon 64 and AMD Sempron processors, for desktop and mobile computing and AMD Opteron processors for workstations and servers.
