Ferengi Latinum & Gold


So I was watching the original ferengi episode on TNG and later I recall something really inconsistent about the Ferengi in DS9.

I specificly recall the TNG Ferengi making a really big deal about GOLD...the Federatioin Communicators were made out of it and slinked around like they were in the presence of Greatness just being around it.

Then in DS9 we learn about Gold Pressed Latinum. It is a liquid that can be put into drops and pressed into Gold bars, slips and strips.

Later Quark says. I wonder who thought of encasing Latinum in useless Gold Dust. So what happened? Did Ferenginar have some sort of "overnight" overhaul of values? Why was gold important before but not anymore?
