dilleet, I think Powell and Condi have already pretty much let it be known that they're out of here after this tour of hazardous duty.

I was trying to remember the last major American figure hung out to dry as publicly and badly as Powell, and I have to go back to our UN ambassador at the time -- Adlai Stevenson, I believe it was -- who had to go before the UN and deny that we were overflying the Soviet Union. That was before Gary Powers got shot down, of course.

I doubt Powell will ever write a (truthful) tell-all or he would have honorably resigned in protest by now. It's the dutiful soldier sort of thing. Assuming Cheyney wins the election, I'd be really surprised if he published anything critical during the next four years. After that, it would be too late to want to read, anyway. By then, you'd want to hear from Bush's second Secretary of State, whoever that unfortunate individual turns out to be.

Actually, by that time, the person you'd most want to hear from would be Alan Greenspan's successor trying to explain how we're going to get out from under this mountain of debt. Or maybe a Secretary of Defense who can tells us when and how we'll be out of Iran.

Did I say Iran? I meant Iraq, of course. Or is it North Korea?
