I disagree with your notion that the sales team has nothing... and they are relying totally on referrals from those who attended the mixer.
I find it refreshing to see a sales group actually solicit referrals. I would hope they would do this regardless of the level of sales. ANY good lead is worth persuing, and I'm all for it.
Then again... I wonder when we will get ANY info on how sales ARE doing. The sales team has been in place for several months... and even though the product has just been released... they SHOULD have sold something by now. I'm looking for some sort of PR to let us know that some at least Decent contracts are in place... and others in the works.
