Ford and Nissan were awarded a combine $7.5 million in federal loans today. But what is more important is what U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu remarked almost as a side line in his speech today.

He said he hopes to make awards to parts suppliers and battery makers within the coming months.

Congress approved the creation of a $25 billion fund in 2008 to help car companies and suppliers develop green vehicles and components.
