Sonora Gold Begins Work on the San Enrique
Gold-Copper-Molybdenum Target in Mexico

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 23, 2004) -
Surface Gold Values up to 78 Grams Per Tonne (2.51 Oz/Ton)

Sonora Gold (SGG: TSXV) announces the signing of the surface
access agreement with the landowner to allow exploration of the
San Enrique property. The access to the property has finally been
resolved after almost 7 years due to a dispute with the previous
operator. Sonora Gold can now initiate a full exploration program
on this 4 kilometer diameter Gold, Copper, and Molybdenum
anomaly.

The San Enrique target was initially identified by a regional
soil geochemistry program which revealed a large anomaly with
highly elevated gold, silver, copper, molybdenum and zinc values.
This work by the previous operator (Campbell Resources) also
included geological mapping, rock chip sampling and airborne
geophysical coverage. Follow up work was interrupted by the
surface access dispute. All exploration data was included when
Sonora Gold acquired the property in late 2002. The San Enrique
area is located approximately 6.5 kilometers south of Sonora
Gold's Santa Gertrudis gold production area where previous
operators Phelps Dodge (NYSE:PD) and Campbell Resources (CCH:TO)
produced approximately 540,000 oz of gold during the years
1991-2000 and where Sonora Gold is currently conducting studies
for the resumption of mining.

At San Enrique, geological mapping revealed a broad, domal
structure cored by shallowly-dipping limestone, calcareous
siltstone and sandstone of the Mural Formation, the primary host
of the Santa Gertrudis gold deposits. These rocks contain
pervasive ductile deformation structures, regional hornfels and
skarn, and have been intruded by the Los Panoches granite pluton
and numerous dykes and sills. The dome represents a tectonic
window through a low angle detachment fault. The gold anomalies
in soils at San Enrique are considerably larger in both areal
extent and in absolute values than those over the deposits
discovered to the north.

The San Enrique area is considered to have excellent exploration
potential. The combination of flat-lying, favourable host rocks,
regional hornfels and skarn development and the presence of
multiple intrusive bodies are all suggestive of a large system.
Geochemical and geophysical data show linear trends indicative of
through-going structures representing excellent exploration
targets. While the primary target is sedimentary rock-hosted
(Carlin-like) gold deposits exploited to the north,
pluton-associated quartz veins (Au-Ag-Cu-Bi-Pb) and
porphyry-style (Cu-Mo-Au) as well as skarn (Cu-Au) and
distal-disseminated (Au-Ag-Cu) styles of mineralization are known
to occur on the property.

Phase 1 Work Program

Initial work will include detailed prospecting and mapping of
targeted areas within the overall San Enrique anomaly, followed
by trenching, sampling and drilling. Five zones have been
selected for investigation during Phase 1 based on the criteria
of coincidence and intensity of geochemical and geophysical
anomalies within favourable lithologies and structures. Trenching
has been selected as the primary exploration tool since the
twenty two deposits mined to date generally were associated with
highly anomalous surface gold geochemistry.

Target 1; Ciria

This area contains the highest gold values from the soil survey
which outlines a NNW-trending zone about 1 kilometer in strike
length. Six soil values exceed 1 gram per tonne gold and are
coincident with a zone of high resistivity indicated by the
airborne survey. The soil anomaly is underlain by rocks of the
prospective Mural Formation and appears to be associated with a
very sharp, brittle fault marking the contact with the overlying
Morita Formation. The area has poor outcrop exposure and
trenching will provide access to bedrock to define drill targets.

Target 2; Huerfanita

Airborne electromagnetic conductors and soil gold geochemistry
define potential mineralized structures trending northwest in
this area which also has numerous anomalous rock samples (up to
78 gpt gold).

Target 3; Rosa

Soil and rock samples with highly elevated gold values over one
kilometer in length are associated with a northeast structure.
This trend appears to be cross-cut by a northwest structure also
associated with elevated gold soil and rock values.

Target 4; Cobre

There is a coincident copper and molybdenum soil anomaly running
parallel to, and south of, the Rosa gold trend. Copper
mineralization (malachite) occurs in sedimentary rocks covering
diorite and felsic volcanic and intrusive rocks mineralized with
chalcopyrite and pyrite. Gold values in rocks in the 1-2 gpt
range also occur in this area.

Target 5; Pinito

This area has elevated gold and copper values in both rock and
soil samples occurring in sedimentary rocks extensively intruded
by diorite near intersecting NE and NW trending structures.

The targeted zones will be exposed through a minimum of 2400
meters of trenching. An initial drill program of 3000 meters of
RC drilling has been allocated for testing of the targets
identified by trenching. This US$300,000 program is expected to
be complete within 3 months.

The Company also announces the granting of 500,000 stock options
pursuant to the Company's Stock Option Plan, to certain officers
and contract employees of the Company.
