All I'll say is that I do suspect that the load balancer adjustment made last month may not have had the benefit expected......
The following are a guess with only a small basis in fact:
I'm pretty sure you hit the nail on the head.
I think the traffic load was about to fry Web 3.
The last time they tried the load balancer there were four servers and the load balancer was causing problems.
It appears it was never up to the task, IMO.
With the recent traffic spike, John (Meatloaf) put the load balancer back in, and that appears to be when the recent problems started, even though there seems to be only two servers in use now instead of four.
John posted recently they are in the process of obtaining a new load balancer that was up to the task.
As annoying as the hangups are, I'm willing to be patient.
