A privateer ship laden with gold, silver, and spices emerges from a storm, but is taking on water. The captain heads toward the nearest island to effect repairs. The island is approaching, but the ship is taking on water too fast and will never make it. Scanning the horizon, the captain also sees a pirate ship approaching from starboard, and on the port side he sees a Spanish warship fast approaching. To make things worse, the captains sees that his sinking ship is also surrounded by sharks and barracuda.
The captain has to decide what to do -
1) Surrender to the Spanish warship and be taken prisoner. His gold, silver, and spices will be lost, but at least he and his crew will still be alive, and perhaps even sail again some day.
2) Be taken and killed by the pirates.
3) Do nothing and be eaten by the sharks and barracuda.
4) Start jettisoning some of his precious cargo to lighten the ship long enough to reach the island. In this option at least he'll keep some treasure, and his life.
So, opting for the least bad option, he orders the crew to start throwing the heavy silver overboard. For a few minutes, the ship rises up in the water, but then takes on more water and starts sinking again. The captain then orders the crew to jettison the spices, but once again, the benefit is only fleeting. Finally the captain very reluctantly orders the crew to jettison the gold, but only half of it. But it works, and the ship is finally able to limp to the island to safety.
Relieved to be alive, and happy to still have half the gold, the Captain goes ashore, where he is greeted by a tribe of hungry cannibals. The cannibals are smiling.
(sorry, it's been a long week :o)
