Isn't that one of the most difficult things for the human mind to do? To forgive, but not forget? Remember the positive and throw out the negative?
It's obviously a personality issue one with a special frame of mind in order to accomplish that.
To live not yesterday, not tomorrow but today in the present.
Easier said than done.
My mind is constantly being dragged into the past contemplating possible futures based on a different choice that I could of made, but didn't.
I think we all do a little of that type of thinking, but most just don't dwell on it.

It's obviously better for your mental health to retain that which is positive and just let the negative stuff go bye bye. Or, it forms a heavy chain around your neck that will ultimately destroy you and leave nothing but a shell of the former self. Some people take psychotropic prescription drugs just to take care of the depression that results from retention of too many negative thoughts or memories.
It's a constant battlefield.

I still love this quote from former V.P Dan Quail said in reference to recruiting African Americans to higher learning.
A mind is a terrible thing to loose.
