The I/O hub for the i7 (I forget the official name but I still remember it as Tylersburg) is rather fully-featured, more so than necessary for a desktop part.

Intel not only integrated the I/O hub onto the processor die, but they also removed a bunch of unnecessary logic. Core i5 really is Nehalem for the masses.
