based on the "broken window fallacy" I would certainly favor the libertarian view, and I agree that hiring for the census is not good economic news, but when I read about producing goods being the answer I think of the idea that our economy has relied on the consumer buying a lot of crap and often buying it on credit. Do you think we can get the economy back on track without consumers racking up debt to buy stuff? I'm sure its obvious that I've never taken econ. :)
