Yes culture differences are huge between Americans and pure ASians. Your communal dishes are what they call "family style" here and that's a big thing to share yes. It takes years for companies to learn the idiosyncrasies of a culture. Thats why international companies have very hard time breaking successfully into China and other Asian markets. You basically need local management etc and often Asia is a totally different business/division within a company.
