Think about it. You have a million shares you paid, what $250k for? You put up 1/5 for sale you'll probably drop the price to 10 cents. So you'll get $10k for $25k worth of stock. Sell the whole million shares, you'll be lucky to get $50k.
The only people who have/will sell are those who bought a few shares on speculation and now don't see the run up coming and since most of them are probably already out of the stock, the volume just remains small.
I don't think the large holders have any intention of selling when there are no buyers. They might as well wait. If even one sells, he/she is likely to drop the price tremendously in the absence of buyers. If buyers appear, you may see the price rise more slowly than you would expect because sellers will take advantage of the chance to get some money back, but they won't dump.
Even if they think the stock is headed to 5 cents or 2 cents, better to wait and see what happens than to put a large block up and cause it to happen.
You either think the company will ultimately be successful and you're buying now, or you don't and you're either waiting for some sign that it will or you're buying thinking that there will be future price run-ups based on speculation (aka, day trading).
All MHO, but I think to get in at a much lower price, you're going to have to wait for really bad news and at that point, you may not want to jump in at any price.
From a personal standpoint, I'd rather buy at 50 cents because of some strong indication of success, than at 2 cents because the company's existence is in doubt.
