0143]Finally, Genasense.RTM. is a drug that is produced by Genta Incorporated, Berkeley Heights, N.J., which inhibits the production of a protein known as Bcl-2. By reducing production of Bcl-2 in cancer cells, Genasense treatment seeks to restore the basic biological process whereby cancer cells can be readily killed by treatment with current methods of anticancer therapy. This process is known as programmed cell death or apoptosis. Genasense is typically administered prior to the administration of anticancer therapy with the intention of potentiating the cancer-killing effects of treatment. Bcl-2 is widely expressed in many types of cancer, and as such, Genasense is potentially applicable to the treatment of an array of tumor types, including and without limitation, melanoma, multiple myeloma, acute myeloid leukemia, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, prostate cancer, and lung cancer. It also has the potential to act synergistically with a variety of chemotherapeutic agents and therapeutic modalities in the treatment of cancer, such as chemotherapy, radiation, monoclonal antibodies and immunotherapy.
