The State of Sonora has built a great mining tradition and has a wide range of mineral resources. Sonora is recognized as the number one mining state in Mexico. The country's biggest gold mine, La Herradura located in Sonora state is owned and operated as a joint venture between Newmont Mining (NYSE:NEM) and Mexican mining conglomerate Industrias Penoles. Other producing mines in the State of Sonora include Pan American Silver (NASDAQ:PAAS), Alamos Gold (TSX:AGI), Capital Gold Corp (OTCBB:CGLD) and Sierra Minerals (TSX:SIM).
