They appear to be artificially competitive in a sector that has brought itself to its knees with bad decisions.
I think Dew's previous post on bonuses was very salient. Bonuses are no longer as they're defined, but have been a contractual part of pay. The general belief of any upper management employee from nonprofitable to profitable companies today is that they should always be well compensated. This is proven annually in 10K statements were every company pegs its management salaries to the upper X% of companies. It's a fallacy.
