I partially agree with you -- our nation as a whole has certainly rejected religion and values, but it has even further distanced itself from rational thought than ever before. I believe that we are now undergoing the wrath of God as a nation as described in Romans Chapt. 1. It is the wrath of abandonment as He turns His back on us because we have turned our backs on Him.
