Actually, my parents were members of Betar, and raised money for the Irgun in the '40s. Starting when I was four and a half I went to Betar camps in the summers, and my first cabin counselor was the camp's rifle instructor. So I learned about the right way to use (and appreciate) guns from earliest babyhood.

Until I was ten I would spend eight weeks in the country upstate NY with these people every summer, and they taught me how to be a twenty first century Jew. Then I went to a YMCA camp for a few years, after that I did Outward Bound.

I consider that to be a well rounded education in self reliance and the outdoors, and I have tried to do somewhat the same for my own kids. Of course, by the time they came along the Irgun was considered (in some circles) to have been a terrorist organization, but Jabotinsky, the founder of Betar, is still widely considered to be one of the first Zionists, and a visionary.

I taught my kids about firearms and the outdoors myself. I am not sure my father knew which end of a gun the bullets came out of. He could kill with a look, though.

In the mid twentieth century, millions of Jews were led to the slaughter like cattle. Twenty first century Jews will not go anywhere near as gently into that good night.
