ON these wild dogs - I have seen this happen ... and dang near was attacked one day, I truly believe. I was bow hunting alone, in a patch of woods on the edge of Fort Riley, Kansas, heading toward a stand where I had hunted several times ... I looked off to the side to see a large white dog that appeaared to be maybe trailing me, off to the side maybe 40 yards, and then another, off on the other side and more behind me, as large as the first, but brown. I was close enough to my tree stand to make it with no real problem, but I do think they were stalking me... I had earlier sprayed some "fox" scent on my boots as a cover up scent, and think now they were following that scent, not me as a person.

I then saw from my stand, at least five of these large dogs, and all had been behind me and traveling the same direction. Coincidence maybe, but they came right up close to my tree stand and one was apparently following right on my track.... by the fox scent I am guessing. They displayed NO fear of me, even after I finally yelled at them .... they just sort of "packed up" and began to slowly drift off, evidently in search of more vulnerable prey. I noted one had on a leather dog collar.

I got the bright idea finally to take a shot, when they were about 25 yards away, and definitely hit one of them ..... but he was able to run away. The sounds I later heard from the woods led me to think the others might possibly have attacked the wounded one.

I later informed the MP/game wardens for the base, and they told me they had heard 2 other reports of a pack of "wild" dogs in the area but gave it little credence. I confirmed the report was apparently true, and they promised to go look for the dogs. Later, I talked to one of them, and he told me they never found them (I doubt they looked beyond taking a jeep ride down the trail!).

I heard a few months later that another guy I knew had seen them, and had gone back with a rifle (illegal on the base, but I hope it was true) and managed to dispatch three, from a tree stand, after calling them in after a big snow storm like one would call coyotes .... I never saw them again or heard of them, but there definitely was a pack there, and they were, in my (feeble) mind at least, dangerous.
