Based on this obviously limited sample, AMD is at least in the game on desktop

Somehow lost is the fact that AMD can't make any money. For you to claim that AMD is in the best position in a long time, as you did, you seem to ignore profitability as a consideration. A company can not be in a good position if they have to lose money to do it.
