***For Immediate Release*** June 15, 2004 SURRY COUNTY, ELKIN, NC- A new industry has just acquired the CMI #4 facility (22,750sf). The North Carolina Department of Commerce representative, Phil Sheridan, was instrumental in bringing the client prospect to visit two facilities in Surry County as well as several others across North Carolina. Basalt Specialty Products Inc., is a privately held C corporation and sister company of Basalt Fiber Company. Basalt Fiber Company is in a unique position of producing and marketing a new product, which will be in demand to replace current high temperature fiber products and to increase the reliability and strength of composite materials. In addition, Basalt Fiber is a new and unique technology that was developed in the former Soviet Union by the Ukrainian and Russians as an advanced alternative product to fiberglass and asbestos. The President/CEO of Basalt Specialty Products Inc., Anthony Fanale and Plant Manager, Gary Starr have been working with Elkin town officials, Eddie Smith and Jack Partin; and the Surry County EDP since February 2004. Basalt Specialty Products will initially employ 12 workers and invest approximately $2 million in machinery and equipment, site renovations, and facility purchase. Anthony Fanale says, “Although this is a start up venture, it has been a work in progress for more than five years. We are pleased to have secured a location that is a ‘company fit’ and a welcoming community.” Mayor Tom Gwyn comments, “Basalt is an innovative company that will be a welcomed addition to our community. We’re excited about the potential for new and expanding jobs in the future. ” Eddie Smith, Elkin Town Manager stated “The Town is very pleased to announce its second manufacturing operation to the community this year.” Partnership President, Jan Critz noted, “The EDP Board and staff are pleased to have been able to assist in securing more jobs to our industrial base.
