there is a technical name for it, not sure what it is though...I use excel for plotting long time frames but usually just 'sketch' the pattern formed after about a week for most short term plays.

it treats price/volume like an energetic system rather than just displaying it as a second dimension of time, as in a standard chart.

I also like to add the volume by price feature to the standard chart to better incorportate the price/volume relationship and see where the price wants to move in order to 'fill in the gaps' created by certain price/volume imbalances...
