I think you need to read up on how the stock market works. Certificates are always valid.
If brokers were to hold an inventory of paper securities, trading a stock would take days. For example, if I would like to sell BLLN, the broker would have to find the exact stock certificates owned by me and send those securities back to BLLN's transfer agent who would then change the names on the securities to that of the new owners. The broker industry would have to hire hundreds of thousands of people to make it even work
