Sirocco. Since the advent of computing only very few holders actually hold certificates. Even your broker doesn't hold physical certificates. your broker holds your shares in what is called "street name".

your brokerage holds your stock for you in "book-entry" form. "Book-entry" simply means that you do not receive a certificate. Instead, your broker keeps a record in its books that you own that particular stock.

To get your physical certificate, which usually is a very stupid idea, you'll have to pay for the service of having them issued and sent to you.

50 years ago, people actually held their certificates.
