Battery Recycling
Domestic batteries of all types will be accepted at the HWRC, including small household Nickel-Cadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries (e.g. from toys, TV remote controls etc), laptop and mobile phone batteries. The batteries will be sorted into individual types and are then recycled. The cadmium from Cd-Ni batteries is separated and refined so that it is 99.99% pure, and is used again for battery manufacture. The salvaged nickel is used for the production of stainless steel.
Recycling both fluorescent tubes and batteries will help reduce pollution on landfill sites and also ensure that the earth’s scant resources are maximised.
Remember that the Port Solent Household Waste Recycling Centre operates a 5’ 9” (175cm) height barrier. This is opened on Fridays and Saturday mornings for those residents who drive vans or people carriers. Traders wishing to dispose of their waste should do so responsibly through a licensed waste collection company. Alternatively, traders can also get a Waste Carriers Licence from the Environment Agency. They will then be able to take their waste to a landfill site or transfer station.
