I think it is the result of an automated platform designed to disguise the real size of the bid and ask. i.e. once the 100 bid fills, another 100 shares goes up automatically. It makes it look like a mm only wants to "buy" 100 shs at the bid, but he'll willingly sit there and soak up a few k before backing off the bid.

IMO it is done to make people think: "oh sh1t, I had better off-load my stock here, or I'll be getting a penny lessfor them in a minute".
