You're right but did the engineers say they could do it? What was the confidence level? 90%? 50%? Who overshot? The architects? The process guys? Management? I think Management assumed they'd have a lot more money at their disposal therefore more resources to throw at the problem. That's because in their hubris they expected Intel to keep screwing up ala P4 forever. They bought ATI. Then C2D happened. The rest is all about making excuses.
