EarthLink Partners With Equinix for Efficient Network Traffic Exchange
Agreement Enables Leading ISP to Enhance Performance and Reduce Costs for Strategic Peering
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. and ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 6, 2002-- Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq:EQIX - news), the leading provider of core Internet exchange services, and EarthLink, Inc. (Nasdaq:ELNK - news), a leading ISP, today announced that EarthLink has selected the Equinix GigE Exchange(TM) service to improve performance and reduce costs for its core network operations and strategic network interconnection with bandwidth providers, backbone networks and large content providers. EarthLink will initially leverage the aggregation of networks participating in Equinix's Internet Business Exchange(TM) (IBX®) centers located in the Washington, D.C. and Dallas metropolitan areas, with possible expansion to additional locations nationwide.

By architecting its strategic network interconnection and peering over the Equinix GigE Exchange service, EarthLink can quickly and efficiently grow its operations with greater flexibility through direct and scalable interconnection, significantly reducing congestion and bottlenecks to growth. Through a single connection to Equinix's central switching fabric in each IBX center, EarthLink can quickly and easily establish a network presence to efficiently and cost-effectively leverage the aggregation of Internet companies operating within Equinix Internet hubs. Equinix Gig Exchange facilitates direct network traffic exchange between EarthLink and its strategic network partners to greatly improve the speed and reliability of traffic exchange, resulting in a more robust experience for EarthLink customers.

Additionally, EarthLink will reduce the costs of establishing connections to its important network partners in multiple locations. Peering over Equinix GigE Exchange allows a more direct route to end-users by eliminating intermediate network backbones, thus dramatically reducing costs while improving service quality.

"Participation at Equinix IBX centers is an important component of EarthLink's overall peering strategy," said Kevin Brand, vice president of network services at EarthLink. "It will allow us to achieve significant savings by careful selection of the most cost-effective peering methods and locations. Next-generation peering centers, such as these Equinix centers, have reached the necessary critical mass of participants for this to be an excellent choice when considering both performance and cost."

"Equinix has re-architected the infrastructure of peering relationships -- how Internet service providers, networks and content providers interconnect in order to exchange data traffic, such as email and web content, between their networks," said Peter Van Camp, chairman and CEO of Equinix. "Equinix's Internet hubs are the only places where leading ISPs, such as EarthLink, can directly access the largest concentration of networks and content providers within the same location. By operating within this network and content-rich environment, EarthLink can reduce the cost and performance degradation associated with linking to its critical content and network peering partners in multiple locations and over long distances."
