Retail data as promised:
I have completed my quarterly retail desktop survey in the Sacramento CA area, and compiled the results into graphs which can be viewed here:
http://home.surewest.net/alan81/posts/retail_speed

In summary:
Athlon peak speed catches up to P4 with both having 3.4Ghz/3400+ models on display. Prescott now represents about 45% of the P4 models on display, while the first celercot (tm from somebody else) are now on display at Compusa. Celeron system count is way down at only 9 systems on display this time. I suspect this is due to the upcoming celercot system releases for the back to school season. Athlon 64 now has two systems on display representing 12% of Athlon systems; both were at CompUSA.

The ratio of the mean speed of Intel to AMD is now .997, so close to 1 as to be amazing. The average P4 speed is 3032Mhz while the average Athlon Model # is 3042. AMD has done a good job of managing old inventory with all systems at model 2800+ or above, while Intel still has some 2.6Ghz systems on the shelves.
