Pilgrim's Pride Seeks To Continue Fight With Chicken Growers

Pilgrim's Pride Corp. (PGPDQ) is asking a bankruptcy judge to let it keep fighting a circuit court ruling in favor of a group of chicken suppliers that poses a potentially "staggering" threat to the company's viability. A group of Texas farmers sued Pilgrim's Pride in 2002, claiming the giant poultry processor exercised too much control over their contracts for growing so-called broiler chickens. Pilgrim's Pride has denied wrongdoing. In July, a three-judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the growers didn't have to prove an "adverse effect on competition" to prevail in their lawsuit.
