Evolution Technology of Morrisville is hoping to revolutionize the way people listen to music. Their new device, the MTV 500, will allow music fans to listen to any music they want, where they want it and for several hours at a time.

The disk.

The local company, which teamed-up with Data Play Technology in Colorado as well as some music industry giants like MTV, BMG, Universal and EMI, is going to market a device that is smaller than a CD case and holds a disk about an inch in size. The $16 disk in turn holds prerecorded music like Britney Spears as well as three hours of blank space.

Evolution Technology hopes the $350 MTV 500 will do well on the market even with tough sells like Andy Mitas, a senior at N.C. State University. Mitas is one of the many who download free music off the Internet. Free is the key word for Mitas. “It should be free and not tied to your ability to make money, or where you are born in life,” he said.

The player.

The device creators hope that the ability to play prerecorded as well as downloaded music, coupled with stability of the player compared to the crash potential of drives, will be enough to win consumer hearts like Mitas’.

Evolution Technology promises to have the player on the market by the end of May, and is also working on a similar device that would allow people to watch movies in the same way.
