Dunesofpuke,
I agree with you on all counts except your reference to DataPlay as a "limited application."
The recent MTV DataPlayer review in USAToday states, "Though DataPlay discs are intended for use in all manner of gadgets, from digital cameras to PDAs, the grand scheme is for music labels to bring out pre-recorded titles that adhere to the new format."
More importantly, I remember (although I cannot find it right now) a quote by a DataPlay exec. saying that the marketing plan is to establish a foothold in the music business, because of the younger demographic, before expanding the medium to PDAs, cameras, phones, games, etc. If anyone remembers this quote, and can find it, please post.
IMO, DataPlay will succeed where Iomega failed with the Clik drives and Sony failed (twice!) with the MiniDisc and the infamous BetaMax snafu. Dataplay will succeed where others have failed, by lining up content distribution BEFORE releasing the devices. It seems like common sense, but mark these words, this will someday be a famous B-school case study on how to (and how not to) release a new technology format to consumers.
Cheers & Luck,
BoSox
