Atom is a great chip, but I think Intel's ultimate goal is to get it into Smartphones.

The 45 nm incarnation of an Atom is a ground breaker for
x86 in terms of low power but it is still way too power hungry
for phones. Maybe at 32 nm Intel can get a complete Atom
SoC to run at 200-300 mW which is what it will take to grab
phone sockets away from ARM.
