Dayne Chastain, treasure hunter
Journal Record, The (Oklahoma City), Mar 16, 1998 by Richard Bedard
"Treasure" is one of those mysterious words that suggests a secret cache of riches, or a rotting cloth sack full of gold. But to Dayne Chastain, a 68-year-old Seminole man who has spent five decades hunting for all sorts of treasure, in all sorts of places, that definition is simply too confining.
In his explorations, he has uncovered Indian relics, old soda bottles worth up to $400, a white hornlike shell that he claims is millions of years old, a dense reddish rock he believes to be a valuable meteorite and numerous coins. To find these objects, he has run metal detectors over the ground, struggled to decipher primitive symbols carved in stone, traipsed through ghost towns, dug through outlaw campsites and poked around rattlesnake-infested caves.
His latest, and perhaps most valuable, discovery actually belongs to a friend. It is an odd skeleton from the Arkansas forest that Chastain believes may be an alien life form. Sometime this month, he's carrying it to Roswell, New Mexico, in a plastic bucket full of preserving alcohol. By his reckoning, it may fetch "tens of thousands" of dollars in Roswell, a town where the marketing of UFO sightings has become a small cottage industry. He hopes to broker the sale of the bones to an interested museum. "It's a salable product," he noted of the remains of the animal, which he says had metallic hair, may have walked upright and wore a fin on its back.

This is the most hilarious scam I have run into in a very long time.
We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth... For my part, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst; and to provide for it. --Patrick Henry, Patriot and Hero of the American Revolution
