So committed are NEC and their customers to Itanium, and so successful has been this Itanium strategy that in only a little more than 3 years of Itanium availability they've sold 1,000 servers? 500 servers? Fewer than that?

Sniff, sniff, I smell a bad case of PC mentality. For over
40 years IBM has made many tens of billions of dollars
designing, building, and selling high end machines in
quantities of several thousand units a year. Granted NEC
doesn't get the same level of software and services tie
ins with its IPF servers as IBM does with its mainframes
but OTOH it doesn't have to spend hundreds of millions
developing the custom CPUs and OSes that drive it.
