It was kind of like when Boeing trided to sell the B-47 to the Air Force.. the first really functional high speed jet airplane for America... with a swept wing.
Folks did not really understand a swept wing before that... and it was what was needed to give an airplane the capability of flying a the speeds the new jet engine would allow.
Then came the 707, B-52, B-747, etc, etc. All with swept wings. But it took a lot of convincing... even with a powerful company like Boeing doing the talking.
