The iPod or the AirPod as you put it will work with the Airport Express. You'd be sort of holding your iPod like a remote control unit and wirelessly playing songs onto your HiFi system through the Airport Express.

Right now you can do the same thing except you'd have to play your music through your desktop or laptop. Being able to do it through your iPod would be much more convenient. You'd probably be able to sync your iPod wirelessly too.
