1048 ET-24Sep08 Traders cover short positions in Fannie and Freddie

Shares of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are both approaching
$2 from their sub 50-cent levels last week as investors facing a short-selling
ban unwound bearish bets. "Rather than true equity value, traders are citing
significant 'buy-in' pressure, where accounts that got short stock due to
in-the-money put exercises last Friday are now being forced to cover their
short because the borrow is unavailable," said Henry Schwartz, president of
Trade Alert. Fannie shares rose 34.62 percent to $1.75 while Freddie shares
jumped 38.46 percent to $1.80.
